In the beginning, it’s all about getting comfortable with your dive gear. Our huge new heated pool was literally made for this reason.

Our Course is composed of check out dives that will help you learn to relax, become more comfortable in the open water and get the most out of your equipment and yourself.
Classes are normally done on both a Saturday and Sunday. The first weekend is spent in and around a large, heated (90 degree) salt-water pool then the second weekend is at a small, local lake.
Classes are kept small so that everyone can receive the personal attention you want during the day. We have a large number of instructors and dive masters in, around and under water at all times to observe, assist and keep you safe at all times..
Our fee is for the classroom, confined (pool) and open water instruction and includes rental equipment (below) & air fills for the tanks. Snacks and beverages are available.

Questions and answers in a comfortable and relaxed setting.

Pool- Day One

You will begin by watching a series of PADI instructional videos and some of dive trips.  During this time PADI Certified Master Dive Instructor Chris Colombo will personally introduce you to the world of SCUBA and explain what is to come. Healthy snacks, a variety of drinks and a hearty lunch will be provided.

You will receive your PADI instructional materials and begin your lessons in a small group. Chris will instruct and demonstrate with real-world examples in a meaningful, memorable, and fun way! If you’re excited and anxious at the same time, you will find Chris to be the very best there is. Just ask any of his graduated students who are now full-fledged divers.

We’ll help you with all of the new equipment.  How to check it out and test it, how to put it on, how it functions and how to operate it, how to take it off and how to take care of it. How to look good in it!

Then you will enter the pool.  And experience for the first time a life-changing event; Breathing underwater!

With Instructors and Dive Masters at your side, you’ll kick off the shallow side of the pool and perform your first underwater Scuba swim. Safety always comes first as we get comfortable with our masks, regulators BCD. We’ll gradually impart the skills you will need to become a safe diver.  And a safe diver is a relaxed and happy diver!

Pool – Day Two

On Day Two we continue practising your newly learned skills and getting more & more comfortable with your equipment.  We’ll spend as much time with you in the water or on the surface to learn any remaining skills, procedures and certification lessons. You’ll take your written exam and all your questions are reviewed in a friendly peer setting. We welcome continued questions and there are no wrong answers; everything is reviewed and your confidence is bolstered as you realize you’ve now gained the practical and academic skills needed to know to be a Certified Open Water Diver.

Lastly, we will schedule your upcoming open water dive where you’ll put these new skills to the test. You will soon be doing what only your fellow divers can do; swimming weightlessly over the coral reefs among the colorful fishes, turtles, dolphins and the many extraordinary creatures of the sea. You are now on your way.

Open Water – Day One

The first day of training is working on fundamentals and we will help you make the transition into the open water as easy and enjoyable as possible. Our open water dives are at a local lake just 15 minutes away. There’s an easy entry edge that will allow you to enter the water and still keep your feet on the ground.

Did we mention the pool is heated. No other Scuba instruction in Michigan has a facility for teaching like ours!

The first dive will be a shallow water dive followed by a descent along a rope line to a platform just 20 feet below the surface. At any time you can safely return to the surface and verify your gear, make any adjustments for comfort and boost your confidence. We will help you adjust your weight belt  so you are properly balanced in the water  at any depth. This will enable you to feel weightless and move effortlessly underwater.

The following dives return to the platform and are designed to help you get more and more comfortable underwater. We will teach you to understand and be able to handle most situations which may arise. And be able to assist your dive buddy if needed. You will review the pool skills you have learned and put them to use in the open water. If you find that you do not feel comfortable with a particular exercise, your instructor will work with you on that exercise. True one-on-one interaction with all of our divemasters differentiates Colombo Scuba from other, larger training groups.

Your dives will take you down to a platform at a 20 foot depth, so that you can focus on your skills without having to think at the same time about fine tuning your buoyancy . Our experienced dive masters will assist the instructor to keep your dive safe and become make it an enjoyable learning experience.

At the end of the day, your dive masters and instructor, who have been working with you all day, will have suggestions and advice for adjustments or changes before your next class. You may want to stick around and watch as advanced students suit up and swim away for a night dive. Believe it or not…you’ll likely be joining them one day soon!

Open Water – Day Two

This is the final day of training where everything comes together. On the second day of dive training we will review, practise and refine the skills you’ve already learned. You will learn to make your own dive plan and to execute your newly acquired underwater navigation skills. The last dive of the day is the most exciting! You’ll now be ready for you and your buddy to plan your dive and dive it together, on your own. You will now know that you have become a confident, skilled and safe diver.

Congratulations – at the end of the day you will become a Certified Scuba Diver!  Your PADI card is your license to travel the world and see what lies under the waves — enter the deep blue and see what you’ve been missing. Welcome to this amazing new world of adventure – for the rest of your life!
